‘He’s a mynah bird. I looked it up. He’s definitely been abandoned.’

‘How do you know that?’ asked Mum.

‘I’ve been watching him. He’s not a wild bird because he’s rubbish at finding his own food.’

‘Oi!’ Bo squawked.

Bo hopped on to the bike’s handlebars and looked at Mum. ‘Can I live here?’ he asked her.

Of course, all Mum heard was

Chirp! Chirp! Chirp!

‘I think you’re right. Wild birds aren’t that tame,’ she said.

So then Bo rubbed his head against her hand. I braced myself for her reaction but Mum didn’t shriek about being allergic or anything!

‘He is quite sweet,’ Mum admitted.

I grinned. ‘Can we keep him? Please? I’ll be responsible for him,’ I promised. Adults like it when you use the word RESPONSIBLE because it’s grown-up and sounds like you really mean it. Which I DO.

Eventually, Mum said, ‘I’ll think about it.’

Which was better than ‘no’.

Dad mended the punctures quickly because we had to go to school – on a Saturday! – for a special crime-prevention day run by the police.

Grace and I got to ride our bikes around the playground which was cool because normally it was banned. Then the police officer used a special marker to put a number on our bike frames. That way, anyone who wanted to buy a second-hand bike could check it wasn’t listed on the police database as stolen.

A policewoman gave out leaflets about security, as well as a poster about the bicycle thief with the fuzzy CCTV photo.
